Over the Chimney Tops, Enniskillen - Barry McAdam

It's up in the air for this painting of Enniskillen. I had worked for a long time on the composition of this piece. I got the balance of the townhall and the church first. The line from the top of Church Street nicely carried the shops and roofs from the top to the bottom of the piece at B&M. I wanted to stack the roofs on top of each other as they went up the hill and this really created a lovely dizzy feel alongside the townhall.
From there it was using the Lough to giving the sense of an island and some airiness with water in what could have turned into an all sky piece.

The colours came next. A lovely slap of red underpainting challenged me to get the shapes right first in colour and how they complemented each other. This is where I was really taken by surprise, the bright summer sky brought a lightness and limited colour palette made the townhall pop. Then the biggest risk of all. Adding in people and cars was a massive risk, but it really paid off. The town then felt like it was twenty to four of an afternoon with people yapping and shopping and dandering around.

I stopped there. The rooftops remain blocky and the reds still come through to give a more painterly feel to the piece that I couldn't wait to share with you.
