“One summers afternoon a couple of years ago I was going for a walk along the meadow near the seafront.  I glanced to the sea and was really struck by the view, the horizonal far distant lines and the near beautiful verticals.  I also love the way that the trees on Dollymount are characters in themselves, standing out against the skyline.

Quite a few times I will see a view like this and capture it in my head knowing that I will get to it some time in the future.

I decided early on that this was to be a piece done in acrylic with a strong underpainting.  This is a technique where a base colour goes on the canvas and then the other colours are painted on top leaving elements of the colour coming through to complement and enhance the painting.  The red glow from the bark on the scots pine became the base for the piece.  The other strong composition that I wanted to achieve was strong bands of colour across the piece each with its own single colour.

The trees were painted with a strong positive rise in the piece and this complements the wistful opening at the centre of the piece that draws you out to the distant sky.

Look closely and you will also see the North Bull and Poolbeg Lighthouses."
